Interval Calculator
(for Music Producers)

Interval: —

This Interval Calculator is designed for modern music producers, composers, and musicians, who are accustomed to the design and functionality of a piano roll.

Instead of stopping at just one octave, this calculator allows you to calculate proper intervallic relationships across various notes on the piano roll, ie, a C1 to a D3, instead of just going from C to D.

How to Use the Interval Calculator

1) Enter A Lower and then Higher Note

Enter any two notes (with accidentals and octaves) into the input fields—for example, C4 and G#5.

2) Instantly Get A Result

The tool instantly tells you the exact musical interval between the two notes, with proper music theory naming. In some cases, you’ll get values like a Major and Minor 10th.

Keep in mind these are just Major and Minor 3rds on top of an octave.

3) Choose from C0 Up to C8

Works for the full piano range—from C0 up to C8—matching what you see in the piano roll of any DAW.

Tip: Doesn’t Support Sharps, Flats, Double-sharps, and Double-flats Very Well

For example, you can use Cb2 to C##3, however, the calculator doesn’t handle these well. But I feel like this is consistent with piano rolls because there isn’t really a double-sharp on a piano roll or a double-flat.

What’s It For?

This tool helps you quickly identify the precise interval between any two notes—whether you’re:

  • Programming melodies or harmonies in the piano roll
  • Building chords or stacking synth layers
  • Analyzing sampled phrases
  • Writing counterpoint or orchestration
  • Wanting to better understand melodic leaps and chord extensions in your MIDI grid

Why It’s Great for Producers

  • DAW-Friendly:
This is the first interval calculator designed to work seamlessly with octave-numbered note names, just like what you see in your DAW’s piano roll. (e.g., C4, Eb5, F#2)
  • Instant feedback:
Get interval names as you program or transcribe, without guessing or referencing old theory books.
  • Handles any range:
Works from the lowest notes on an 88-key piano (C0) to the very top (C8), matching modern sample libraries, synths, and DAWs.
  • Music-theory correct:
Identifies even advanced or compound intervals: “Major 13th,” “Diminished 8th,” “Minor 7th + 5 octaves,” etc.
  • Save time & avoid mistakes:
No more guessing or counting keys—just type, click, and know instantly.

Sample Use Cases

  • Want to layer a pad a “perfect 5th” above your bassline in FL Studio? Type your bass note and candidate top note—get instant confirmation of the interval.
  • Wondering if your synth lead jumps a “Major 9th” or a “Minor 10th” in Ableton? Type it in and see.
  • Reverse engineer chords in MIDI packs, or transcribe solos and understand the harmonic logic—faster.
