Select Chord Types

Hey what’s good, it’s good to see you again. Welcome to the my Chord Identification Quiz.

I designed this mobile-responsive music theory test for musicians and students who want to sharpen their chord and interval recognition skills, improve ear training, and reinforce music theory in a fun, game-like way.

As it currently stands, I have 19 of the most common chord types across all 12 notes. Eventually, I’ll have as many as 40-50 and I’ll include root, 1st, and 2nd inversions as well, for those of us who want to really test our knowledge.

How to Use the Chord Identification Quiz

Tap to Enable Sound - Chord Identification Quiz
Click the “Tap to Enable Sound” button if you’re mobile.

This gets around audio limitations on mobile browsers.

1) Select a Root Note

1) Select a Root Note - Chord Identification Quiz
Choose a root note (C, D♭, E, etc.) using the buttons at the top.

2) Identify the Chord Type

2) Identify the Chord Type - Chord Identification Quiz
The tool will play a chord based on the selected root and a random chord type.

Choose whichever chord you think it is. In this case, it’s the Cadd9.

3) Check Your Answer

3) Check Your Answer - Chord Identification Quiz
Instantly see if you were correct! Your score is tracked at the bottom.

It’ll tell you it’s correct or if its wrong, the right answer instead.

4) Use the Staff

4) Use the Staff - Chord Identification Quiz
Click “Show Staff” to make the staff visible.

Personally, I prefer to have the staff not visible, because then it’s more of a ear training test. But if you’re struggling with a new chord type, make it visible to have a better idea.

This is especially useful for chord types that are only slightly different from each other, ie, the m7b5 vs the dim7 or the dominant 7th and 9 chords.

5) Customize Chord Types

5) Customize Chord Types - Chord Identification Quiz
Click “Chord Types” to select which types you want included in the quiz.

By clicking on the “Chord Types” button, you can choose which chords to test. Currently all are selected so all are visible in the chord selection menu buttons.

6) Enable Random Root Mode

6) Enable Random Root Mode - Chord Identification Quiz
Toggle “Random” to quiz yourself with random roots every round for greater variety.

Hide the staff and then set the “Random” to “ON” and you’ll get a much harder quiz that’s more accurate to how you would use it in real life.

As I said earlier, I’ll probably add in root, 1st, and 2nd inversions later and also throw in the bass clef as well for people who want to get real serious.
